Bonnie’s journey from SVP and CNO was a surprise route. With more than 30 years of experience in nursing, Bonnie’s own career grew organically at Seattle Children’s upon earning her Master of Science in Nursing. She served in different positions, such as clinical nurse specialist, program director, and associate chief nurse for critical care, before assuming the position of CNO in 2018. Bonnie values patient safety and quality of care, working to maintain Seattle Children’s excellence in the future. She prioritizes leadership development, building relationships, managing change, and driving diversity to develop an inclusive workplace and attain equitable healthcare outcomes.
Bonnie’s message to future nursing leaders is straightforward: “Be a risk-taker, be open-minded, and emphasize teamwork. One person can only do so much.” She stresses the value of learning from failure and using those lessons in subsequent attempts. As CNO, Bonnie is dedicated to making Seattle Children’s a desirable place for nurses to work, sustaining Magnet status, and being a leader in patient care. She urges nurses to pursue research and evidence-based practice to support growth. Bonnie is also committed to creating plans for nurse recruitment and retention, dealing with workforce challenges in the future to provide patients with excellent care.
