Background

The Monroe-West Monroe Business and Professional Women presented a $4,500 cheque to the ULM Foundation, continuing a scholarship partnership with the University of Louisiana Monroe that stretches back more than three decades.

The donation came from the organization’s 2026 fundraising efforts and supports non-traditional female students at ULM who demonstrate financial need.

Monroe-West Monroe BPW established the scholarship in 1989, building on its founding mission of advancing equity through advocacy, education and opportunity.

The event also brought a significant announcement. The late Peggy Wells, a Past President of Monroe-West Monroe BPW and State President of the Louisiana Federation of Business and Professional Women from 2010 to 2011, left an estate gift to the scholarship fund that has nearly doubled the size of the endowment.

The gift ensures the organization’s impact at ULM will carry forward for generations. ULM President Dr. Carrie L. Castille addressed the group during the occasion, saying the gifts carry lasting impact and reflect a deep commitment to women and women in leadership at the university.

The scholarship’s reach within the ULM community was on full display at this year’s luncheon. LaShonda Reese, a current ULM employee and former scholarship recipient, attended the event and expressed gratitude to the organization for the support that helped shape her career path.

The presentation marked another chapter in a relationship built on consistent investment in women pursuing higher education, with the Wells estate gift adding new scale to what Monroe-West Monroe BPW has quietly built over more than 35 years.
