The number of women-led businesses registered on the Udyam Portal has crossed 3 crore, according to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The announcement points to a broader shift in how women are contributing to and shaping the country’s economy.

A large part of that shift traces back to government-backed financial programmes. Under the PM Mudra Yojana, loans worth more than Rs 16 lakh crore have been disbursed to women entrepreneurs, giving millions access to capital they previously could not reach.

Separately, over 32 crore women have entered formal banking through the PM Jan Dhan Yojana. Women’s credit offtake is also climbing fast, with projections putting women-linked loans at Rs 76 lakh crore by 2025, up from Rs 16 lakh crore in 2015.

The numbers go beyond finance. More than 10 crore rural women are now part of self-help groups, building local economies from the ground up. More than 43 lakh female students are enrolled in STEM programmes across India.

Women also hold a presence in nearly half of India’s recognised startups, signalling movement at the top end of the business ecosystem. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pointed to the past 12 years of NDA governance as a period of deliberate, policy-driven progress for women across entrepreneurship, education, governance and science.

His remarks underline that the push is not limited to one sector but runs across multiple pillars of national development. Officials say the focus remains on dignity, opportunity and long-term empowerment, with the goal of ensuring women have the resources and platforms to drive India’s next phase of growth.
