Background

The Oswego Association of Business and Professional Women’s Club has chosen Brooke Sutton from Mexico as the recipient of its 2026 scholarship. She will be receiving a scholarship amounting to $500 for her studies at the University of Buffalo, where she is planning on studying business administration and marketing.

The OABPW scholarship targets graduating female high school students and selects recipients based on financial need and involvement in school, community, and extracurricular activities. Winners may use the award at any two- or four-year college or business and technical institution across the United States. Sutton, who played varsity lacrosse for four years, met the criteria set by the organisation.

Alongside the scholarship announcement, the OABPW also installed its officer team for 2026-2027. Barbie Russo, past president, conducted the installation ceremony. The president of the association is Mary Clark, Vice President is JoAnn Locy, Secretary is Myia Hill, and Treasurer is Dawn Smith, who served as president in the immediate past.

The Business and Professional Women’s Organisation is the oldest body of its kind in the world, dedicated entirely to the interests and needs of employed women across all occupations and employment levels. The Oswego association separated from the international body in 1989 and has since operated as a standalone community service group of working women and retirees.

The organisation’s core mission includes supporting the Oswego Human Concerns Center, adopting families in need during Christmas, and awarding an annual scholarship to a female graduate of Oswego High School or Mexico High School. Monthly meetings run from September through June, held on the third Tuesday of each month.
