Background-
Nykaa co-founder and Nykaa Fashion CEO Adwaita Nayar is steering an ambitious expansion of the company’s House of Brands division, home to labels like Kay Beauty, Dot & Key, Nykaa Cosmetics and Naturals, Nykd By Nykaa and KICA.
The unit currently sits at an annualised gross merchandise value of Rs 3,500 crore, and Nayar has set her sights on doubling that to Rs 7,000 crore over the next four years.
Nayar argues that India’s beauty market still has room for more domestic players, noting that international brands frequently miss nuances specific to Indian consumers. That gap, she says, gives local labels a real shot at building lasting relevances in the category.
She describes her House of Brands vision as a separate track from Nykaa’s core retail operations, run with its own distinct identity and dedicated team. Years spent running an ecommerce beauty platform gave her a close read on what Indian shoppers actually need, from pigmentation-focused products to sunscreens formulated for local skin types.
To carry that vision forward, Nayar is recruiting talent from established brand-building firms, aiming to bring fresh expertise into a team she wants kept distinct from the rest of the company.
Her playbook mixes acquisitions with in-house brand creation, always chasing unmet demand. Ahead of the sunscreen boom, Dot & Key rose to become a category frontrunner, while premium makeup for Indian skin tones gave Kay Beauty its opening, and cosmetics gave Nayar a chance to bring globally competitive products to Indian shelves at fairer prices.
