Background

The Women in Energy Network of Egypt (EWiEN) held the second Lead Woman event in June, where industry leaders met to discuss women’s leadership, diversity and the future trends of the energy sector.

The conference was organised by Eni on the theme “Women Powering Energy: Own Your Real Power”. The discussions focused on how to strengthen women’s leadership and decision-making skills and how to prepare organizations for different challenges such as an uncertain economy, supply chain changes and transformational technology.

EWiEN Chair and Capricorn Energy Egypt Managing Director Eleanor Rowley said the network has continued to expand since its launch in 2022 while remaining committed to helping women achieve their full potential in the energy industry.

Speakers highlighted the growing importance of diversity in leadership. They said organisations benefit from different perspectives, stronger collaboration and better governance when leadership teams include people with varied backgrounds and experiences.

Chevron Egypt Country Manager Channa Kurukulasuriya said effective leadership depends on encouraging people to use their voices and contribute confidently. Francesco Gasparri, who is IEOC’s Managing Director, further said that effective leaders must learn how to listen, be fair to others, and foster a culture of idea sharing by all.

The experts highlighted the fact that board diversity leads to good governance, better risk management, and improved corporate performance. They emphasized that the problem today is not finding qualified women leaders but creating more opportunities for them.

The event concluded with a leadership development workshop that provided participants with practical tools to strengthen leadership skills, build confidence and improve decision-making. Organisers said the programme aims to support more women in taking leadership positions across Egypt’s energy sector.
