Felicia Shanken: Building a Legacy of Empowerment and Purpose

In a time when organisations often prioritise speed over depth and visibility over insight, meaningful transformation rarely arrives with spectacle. Transformation starts with small steps taken through reflection, determination, and boldness. It happens to those who see opportunities where others see gaps, and do things before anyone knows about them. This is exactly where Felicia Shanken, Founder of Philadelphia Women’s Network Connection, LLC (PWNC), fits perfectly. She is someone whose actions speak volumes even though they aren’t always meant to draw attention. Through PWNC, PWNC Foundation Inc. and PWNC Digital Futures™, she has established an inter-connected system that aims at enabling women to lead, create, and flourish throughout their careers.

The Journey into Entrepreneurship

Felicia did not follow a conventional path into entrepreneurship. Long before she began building business ecosystems, she dedicated her career to caring for patients. She holds an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Gwynedd Mercy University and spent nearly a decade serving veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Philadelphia. Those years in healthcare gave her something that no MBA program can fully teach: the ability to stay steady under pressure, to put people first, and to understand that service is not just a job title, it is a way of living.

But a quiet restlessness was always there. She had always carried a sense of business, run a few side ventures over the years, and felt the pull of something bigger. About seven and a half years ago, she made the decision that changed everything. She left her stable federal government job, benefits and all, and stepped fully into entrepreneurship. It was not an easy call. It was a leap of faith. And she has not looked back once.

The Vision That Began Over Lunch

In 2018, Felicia was sitting in a Panera Bread in Center City Philadelphia when the vision arrived. She wanted to create a women’s network, but not the kind that fills a hotel ballroom with business cards and small talk. She wanted something real. She wanted a space where women could learn, grow, and build together without pretence. She called it a “safe haven with a sisterhood atmosphere,” and that is exactly what she built.

Philadelphia Women’s Network Connection officially launched in March 2019. Within a year, it was growing fast. Then COVID-19 disrupted the world, bringing everyday life and global activity to a sudden halt. Live events became impossible overnight. Many organizations at that stage would not have survived. Felicia pivoted. She moved everything online, launched virtual memberships, hosted events on Zoom and Facebook Live, and found new ways to keep her community connected and growing through one of the most disruptive periods in modern history.

That pivot was not just a survival move. It was a turning point. It deepened her understanding of digital tools, accelerated her thinking about technology, and ultimately planted the seed for PWNC Digital Futures™.

Entrepreneurship Meets Digital Innovation

Today, PWNC serves a community of nearly 2,500 small business owners. The organization is a certified EDWOSB, and MBE, certifications that reflect both the diversity and the credibility Felicia has worked hard to establish. Her clients include federal, state, and city government agencies, B2B organizations, private sector companies, and universities. What started as a local women’s network has grown into something much larger.

The PWNC Foundation Inc. is the nonprofit arm of the ecosystem, built specifically to help women in underserved communities make the leap from corporate employment to full-time entrepreneurship. The PWNC Foundation Transition Program is the heart of this work, a structured, practical program that gives women not just inspiration but the actual tools and support to make that transition successfully.

And then there is PWNC Digital Futures™, Felicia’s most ambitious launch yet. This arm focuses on AI education, digital marketing, and technology adoption, with special programs designed for women entrepreneurs over 50. Her thinking here is ahead of the curve: she is not just helping women catch up with technology, she is positioning them to lead in it. The goal is to ensure women are not only participants in the digital economy, but they are also architects of it.

Global Recognition for a Mission-Driven Leader

The accolades Felicia has earned over the years are not just impressive, they tell the story of someone who has been consistently doing the work and earning recognition from institutions that notice. In 2025 alone, she received the prestigious Trailblazer Award from NAWBO Greater Philadelphia, was named Top Women’s Empowerment Strategist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals, and was recognized by Microsoft’s MSN as one of the Top 10 Self-Made Women of 2025.

That same year, she took the stage as an international speaker in Paris, bringing her message of women’s empowerment and digital leadership to a global audience. She also holds the distinction of being a Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women: Black in Business alumna. In 2026, Digital Reference named her one of the Best Keynote Speakers in Philadelphia.

She has been featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Fun Times Magazine, VIP Global Magazine, International Brainz Magazine, USA Today’s Black History Month Special Edition, and The Top 100 Magazine’s Innovators & Entrepreneurs 2025 list. She was named Alignable’s Local Business Person of the Year for Lower North Philadelphia and has also received recognition from the Global Institute for Human Excellence and the Acereel Studio Premier Dream Chasers Award.

Empowerment Meets Practical Action

Felicia does not speak in abstractions when it comes to the challenges women face. She is specific, honest, and direct. She says the biggest obstacles women encounter today are visibility in spaces where they are underestimated, access to capital and mentorship, and keeping pace with technology while still carrying the weight of proving themselves at every turn.

Her solution is equally direct: build ecosystems that teach strategy, not just motivation. She often says women need rooms where real tools are handed out, not just applause. Through PWNC, she is creating exactly that, running leadership workshops, business transition programs, AI education sessions, and strategic networking experiences that deliver immediate, measurable value.

On digital transformation, her view is bold and optimistic. She sees AI and automation as the greatest equalizers women in business have ever had access to. Global platforms and digital learning are removing barriers that existed for decades. The opportunity she is most excited about is digital ownership, courses, communities, intellectual property, and knowledge-based businesses that women can build, scale, and pass down.

When it comes to leadership, Felicia keeps it simple: real influence is not about your title. It is about your consistency, your integrity, and your willingness to keep evolving. The leaders who will matter in the years ahead are those who know how to embrace technology while remaining deeply human in how they serve the people around them.

A Philosophy for Lasting Success

She says we are entering one of the most transformative seasons in the history of women in business. Technology is rewriting the rules. The playing field is shifting. Women now have the tools to lead differently and more powerfully than ever before. Her mission is to make sure they know it, believe it, and act on it.

She closes every conversation, every stage, every room with the same six words. They are simple, they are personal, and they land every single time: “Never, ever give up on you.” In a world full of noise, Felicia Shanken is building something that lasts. Not just organizations. Not just programs. A legacy shaped one woman at a time.
